I have a 1993 Johnson 90 hp that has had the VRO removed. I've been mixing the oil and gas now. The guy I bought it off of gave me the oil tank and lines he had removed. I have a manual for this motor but it's not clear how i'd go about hooking everything back up again. The last owner had it removed because he said he never trusted those things and prefered to mix by hand. After reading the tutorial on VRO i'd like to hook it back up. Does anyone have a diagram of what goes where? Thanks

Re: Re-connecting VRO

Well since I just removed mine I can tell you how to hook yours back up easily. :)

You have the tank with 2 connections going to the motor, one is oil and the other is the wiring. Mine was a 4 wire harness, I have heard some older ones are 3. The wiring plugs into the pigtail hanging from your VRO/Fuel pump. The oil line should connect on the cowling where your fuel line connects and then a line runs from there to the oil side of your VRO, the one that is currently blocked off. You dont have to touch any of the fuel or vacum lines.

You need to prime the oil line to make sure you have oil up to the motor before starting it, mine had a primer bulb near the tank. I would strongly suggest filling the oil tank and continuing to mix your oil until you are sure the oil pump is working correctly. Mark the oil tank with tape and watch for oil consumption before you stop pre mixing. Also you should test the VRO warning horn for operation, since it was disconnected you can not be sure it works unless you test it.

first question, did he remove the Mixing pump and go with a straight fuel pump? or did he just to continue to use the fuel side of the mixing pump?

I'll try and post these pics I took today. I got a tank from him with one line on it with a primer bulb. I got the mounting bracket. I got a long cable with two wires and one piece of gas hose about a foot long. The fuel pump in the first pic is what is in the motor now. It has a main line in the front there with that round part. From the bottom of the pump is two lines. One splits into two and goes to either carb and the second line goes to a fitting on the block.

In the second pic you can see the brass fitting one of the lines goes to on the right side below the starter with all the white writing on it.

I'm not sure what a mixing pump looks like tashasdaddy. Can you tell from the pics? Thanks

Re: Re-connecting VRO

This is a very interesting post. I just bought a 1987 Johnson 90 HP VRO that has the oil assembly removed. I was wondering what advantages there are to removing this? Also, what modifications should have been done to the engine with the removal of the VRO system so I can be sure it was done properly. Thanks!

Re: Re-connecting VRO

My motor had to be rebuilt by the prior owner when the vro failed.

I have no interest what so ever in hooking it back up. I'd rather know that my motor is getting the right amount of oil FOR SURE, than hoping that a new fangled vro is working or not.

The pump in your picture is a conventional lift pump and cannot be used with the oil tank. If you want to upgrade to the mixing system, get the newer OMS pump.
