Hi all! I'm new to these forums so forgive me if this in the wrong place.

I recently purchased a new Alumacraft 1436lt jon to replace my old rotten Carolina boat. I was planning on using my old motor, a 1975 25 Johnson, but the new one is only rated for a 15. The dealer assured me it would be fine, but I'd like to get other opinions. Should I look for a new motor? Will it be safe to use the old one?

Thanks in advance for your insight!

Should be fine, just pack gear to the front of boat. You should do that anyway to keep the nose down and more manuverable.

Re: New boat

Thanks for the help!

I plan on adding a wood floor (if I can figure out how to cut the taper in the bow) and placing the batteries/fuel tank somewhere forward, so that should help with the weight. I could get around 25mph with the old wood boat so I expect this tinny will scream!

Re: New boat

Ask the dealer if he will still warranty the boat when you bow or rip out the transom and the factory finds out you almost doubled the rated horepower, I would geuss not so much.

The factory designed that boat to run its max load with a 15 horse engine and stay together, if you double the power you are way overloading the transom and possibly creating an unsafe condition as the boat wasn't designed to run that fast.

Hang weight of the motor is only one aspect, hanging a motor puts little stress on the transom it is designed to handle the twisting force of the motor under way, double power, double stress, its like putting 70 psi in a tire designed to take 35, ya it will hold up for a while but eventually it will fail, normally pretty bad.

No I wouldn't do it.

Can get you into handeling problems real fast. To much torque for a light boat. If you have to use it, install some kind of spacer on the throttle stop to prevent you from going WOT. You will be doing yourself a favor. FRED

Nope... I would bet that the dealer that said it will be fine won't mount the engine for you.

Re: New boat

I ran the boat about a mile down river and back this afternoon, it was a little scary! Way too fast and seemed to want to suddenly change course without warning. The hunt for a 15 is on!

Thanks for all of your help!
