was perusing the whaler web site as I'm interested in their smaller hulls, 13 and 15 footers, though I'm not going to pay what it costs for a new one. I have a 20" 50hp evinride that has no boat to push around. it's the light (180lbs) 1975 versio that's well below the max engine weight for the 13 and 15 foot sports. anyway, both the current 13 and the 15 footers and l have the 20" transom I'd need. but super casual searching reveals that some older small whalers had a 15" transom.

my question: when I search for used small whalers what was the year they began to use 20" transoms?

I realize this is kinda specific, and maybe it's better asked on whalercentral.com, but I'm not a member there and am too lazy to join just to ask that question.

Re: small whaler transom heights?

The Whaler 13s went to a 20" transom about 1973. If there is doubt about the year look for the smirked bow (vs. tri-hull bow).

All of the classic 15s had 20" transoms.

I wouldn't put a 50 on a BW 13. Did that once and the boat was scary.

50HP is very good on a classic 15 Sport, Supersport or Striper.

Re: small whaler transom heights?

thanks for that info!

your comments on the 13 with a 50 raise some questions...then again, I'm new to boating so if you could bear with me for a sec. so here goes:

first, the specs on the whaler web site list 40hp as max for the 13. would an extra 10hp really change things that much?

next, the specs for the 13 say that max motor weight is like 235lbs, (I forget exactly), but its a good bit less than the 180lbs or so that the nada guide says my '75 evinrude 50hp weighs.

and finally, what caused your dissatisfaction with 50hp on the 13? was it the sensation of excess weight in the back? scary-fast performance? combination of both?

now mind you, the specs i quoted are for current whalers, so maybe they don't apply to the older ones?
