1985 Mercruiser 140 Troubles

My son just bougt his first boat. It is a vip viceroy 1985 with the mercruser 140 in it. When we went to get it could run it at full throttle but would not idle. Bought new plugs and points for it. Seems like the gas mixture isn't right.Have been working on car engines most of my life but can.t seem to get this thing to run. Any suggestions would be greatly apprecated. ty in advance.

Stale/bad fuel, clogged filters.
have you done a compression test

Not yet but seeams to have good compression.

Doesn't really say much, is that 10 years or 50 years? Makes a big difference.
Ever worked on points ignition and carbs before?
