I have a 1999 115hp Jonson ocean pro out board I am haveing trouble with I bought it in November and have had it out about 6 times no problem starts up right away runs good , then the 7th time I took it out it ran good I shut it off and went to start it about an hour or two later and it started up for about 5 secounds and I couldn't get it going. after getting it home I noticed I had some black oil dripping out from around the prop? I have been told this is un burnt fuel! I tried to start it when I got home and it fired up no problem. so i took it out again and it did the same thing again but this time never got away from the dock. Ran for 2 seconds and wont fire up again and when I got home had more of the un burnt fuel coming out . tried to start again today in the driveway but 2 seconds and thats it more un burnt fuel!!!!! Was in a fishing derby on the weekend using my small 8hp and thought I would try and start the 115hp and you guessed it it started up no problem ran it for 20mins shut it off and it started again no problem 6hrs later! What is up with this thing? Any help or ideas would be great thanks.

sounds like you have an electrical problem, dirty connections, bad power pack, or worse. check you spark immediately after it shuts down. i am assuing the starter will turn the engine, and not start.

I will go and try that out if it will start! I have heard it could be the power pack also been told to change the optical sensor. When you say "OR WORSE" what could it be that would be that bad? Will check the plugs now and get back to you.
Thanks

Ok so just tried to start it and in the past it had turned over even when it didn't start! But now nothing no noise of any kind when I try to turn it over. I have power to the main motor power tilt works Batteries are fine! Please tell me this means power pack not "OR WORSE"!!!!!!!

power pack would not keep it from turning over, the fuse controls the starting circuit, and control electrics. do you have an emergency kill switch lanyard? did you check it?

Re: 1999 Johnson problem starting?

Ok I found the fuse problem! I did what you said I started it and ran it for about 10mins no problem starting and I checked the plugs for spark right after and had a good spark on all 4 plugs. I turned it off and started it up another 5 times over the next 2hrs and it started up every time no problem! Any chance this could have something to do with choking it to much? Or does it still sound like a power pack or Oliptial sensor problem?

Thanks

Re: 1999 Johnson problem starting?

Do these have a history flooding easy, as I wouldn't of thought I was over choking it. I pushed the key in and kept it in till it would start. I guess this is going to be opne of those things I just have to keep watching and see if it happens anymore! With any luck it won't happen just before a big fishing Derby! If I pull the plugs and dry them and turn the engine over a few times if it becomes flooded will this help?

Thanks again for all your help and info
