I'm going to use this as my project thread. For starters, here's the thread where I first bought my boat:

http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=300618

It's mostly cosmetics that I need to work on. Filling holes, paint, etc. I do have a soft spot in the floor that I need to address, but I'm going to attempt a patch job first. If I need to do a full deck replacement I'll do that next winter (hopefully).

It's in my garage now, and I've started to strip a lot of old snaps off it and other weird hardware.

I'm also working on pulling the original seats to replace them with new lounges that I'm picking up later this week.

I will also be tackling the electrical this week.

I would like to try and put it in the harbour this weekend, but that might be a stretch.

I will update this thread with all the stupid little things I do, including work on the trailer, etc. I'll post some pics in a second....

Here is my awesome interior:

I've started to take out the original seats:

I couldn't believe how heavy these buggers were! I swear I pulled out over 100 pounds of seats...probably a bit more. Look what I found under the drivers seat:

I took the downrigger base off. It was mounted to the boat using drywall screws and anchors....the blue kind.

I have about 50 holes to fill from old snaps and hardware I've removed.

Well, that's it for now. I have to figure out how to get the seat bases out. I think they're glassed in, so I'll have to cut them out somehow.

Hi 22E6441 - That is one COOL looking boat! It looks like the previous owner took good care of it too. I really like the bow design on it & I'm more than a little jealous about the power T/T on your Johnson 50.

BTW - Don't go and eat any of those mushrooms you found!

I owned a Steury and they had good fiberglass hulls. Fill those holes with marinetex or get the marine epoxy that you can cut off a chunk and knead. Over fill the holes and flatten the back side if you can reach it.... then sand the area smooth. It works.

My 15' had the same exact dash and layout.

So I'm working on getting the old seats out....what a huge pain in the butt! I didn't expect them to be this hard to get out. They were glassed in pretty good, and I've never worked with fiberglass before so I guess I was surprised by it's strength as well. Here's some more pics.

I've been using a hammer and chisel to do the work since I don't have a grinder yet and I'm scared to use my reciprocating saw in the boat. I've been slowly chipping away at the glass and trying to smooth it all out. It's a lot of work.

I'm getting there......

I'll finish this over the next few days. Then I need to figure out how to mount my new seats. The old seat bases are narrower and longer than the new ones, and the old area where the seats were is lower than the carpeted areas due to heavier glass there.

I did find a bit more rot under one of the old bases. I will need to replace my deck, but I won't be doing this until next winter. I only have two soft spots right now, but I bet there will be more by the end of this season.

If you can't tell, I take a lot of stupid pictures. Hopefully they will help somebody or just help to satisfy some curiosity....

Much more to come......

Thanks, Bob. I'm going to try that.

i also have a big scratch in the bow that I'm going to try and fix the same way before I start prepping for paint. Another change will be to the bow eye....I'll be going to one that has two posts rather than one....more of the U bolt style. the current one is pretty lose and crummy. I'll need to use more epoxy to strengthen up the bow eye area too.

Re: 1975 Steury V415SS Open Bow

Question....now that I have exposed fiberglass strands, do I need to coat them in epoxy or resin? I think I just need to get some resin and brush it over the exposed glass strands to water proof them......any advice?

No need, just grind them down. Only wood needs waterproofing.

And next time, borrow someone's sawzall :)

okee dokes. I'm going to replace the deck next winter anyway....

So, here we go...the old seat bases are completely out:

I've assembled one of my new seats and simply placed it in the boat to see how it will fit. Looks pretty nice in there I think....way nicer than the old orange seats!

I'm going to do my electrical before mounting the seats. Easier to lay down and look under the dash without the seats in the way.

New seats look great!

Curious if shrooms are under the deck?

Very cool boat!

I hope there are no shrooms under the deck! Ick.

the deck is in pretty good shape for a 34 year old boat. Like I said, it has one bad spot port side near the stern, and then there are toonie sized (CDN $2 coin) rot spots under the old seat bases...neiter of which go through the deck after some probing. I may try some of that Git Rot stuff on those spots just to see if it's any good.

Re: 1975 Steury V415SS Open Bow

So the soft spot in my deck seems to be more of a soft area. Probably a good 4 square foot area to be precise....all in the back behind the seats but before the splashwell. I also stuff my hand way back down into the bilge and felt underneath the deck....wet. Very wet. Wet enough that I'm afraid to try a patch job right now.

I'm launching the boat tomorrow so we'll see how she feels. If I feel some hull flexing in the water that might indicate rotten stringers, I may need to do this sooner rather than later. If she feels solid enough, I'm just going to do a full deck / stringer / transom job next winter. (that is...if I really like the boat...but I think I will)
