Buying a used trolling motor

Is there anything specific to look for when buying a used trolling motor? Other than appearance and the simple fact that it works when you turn it on?

With outboards you have compression, lower unit oil, etc.

I'm probably going to look at a used 36lb minn kota transom mount motor, so any tips about potential issues would be appreciated.

If all functions and speeds work, other than appearance, that's all you need to know. Power it with the largest deep cycle battery you have room for and go fishing.

OK, thanks. That's pretty much what I thought, but you never know.

There's so much to know about boats and their accessories!

Oh, do you think the 36 lb motor would give me a good enough push to move the boat? Doesn't have to be fast, but needs to actually move.....

I don't think that motor's going to have enough power for your boat. I have a 36lb that I use for my 12' aluminum and your Steury looks to be alot heavier than my tinny.:D Do you know how heavy it is? If the trolling motor is undersized it will just be frustrating for you when you try to use it. I think a 46lb-55lb would work much better on your boat.

I run a 30lb. Minn Kota on my 12' aluminum and it's plenty with two guys and fishing gear. Make sure the motor works on any 12V deep cycle and then buy the biggest deep cycle you can like previous poster recommends.

I've got a HUGE battery for my size boat- it's like having an extra person on board. That way I can stay out all day(or night) long fishing and cruising around without worrying about having to row home(I only bring one canoe paddle w/ me since the setup is so reliable.

For a fiberglass boat I would think you will want 45+ lbs of thrust. My buddy bought a 28lb for his 14' aluminum and was underpowered. The bow mounts will run some serious cash brand new so I'd advise you to look at a used transom mount anywhere from 45lbs to 55 lbs to push the Steury around. You should find one that works for around $120-200 used.

Also- Minn Kota electrics are awesome on canoes. I can really zip around with it if I don't feel like paddling.

Agree with others. 36 won't be enough. Look for 45 +.

I've got an 18' Starcraft and found my 48 was bare minimum for good trolling speed. Now have a bow mount 55 to finish installing.

Also make sure it is a variable speed. Not the 5 speed as I find you need to be between speeds, or on a 12', the lowest speed is too fast. Had one of those too.

A couple of things to consider checking:

- Tilt bracket works at different positions, that no parts, knobs, or levers are missing

- Slide motor up and down shaft length to make sure it is not bent (especially if a metal shaft)

- Make sure tension (steering) adjustment is working, not too loose or tight. Adjust it and test side to side steering.

- Remove prop and check for fishing line around shaft (finding some might be an indication the seal problem (potential))

- If possible, run in garbage can half full of water. Gradually turn up speed to the point where the water is about to slosh out. ie load test.

Just noticed that you are right across the Detroit river from us here in the states. You should wheel across the Ambassador bridge and buy this one...they go pretty quick for a deal this good.

Well, if by right across you mean a 3+ hour drive..... :p

I'm watching the local listings here, but they're few and far between locally.

I have a 30 minute rule for used goods. If I have to go any further than 30 minutes to see something, I pass. Too many disappointments in the past....

I hear that, I wasn't sure where Hamilton is, are you closer to Toronto than Detroit? I vaguely remember driving and seeing Hamilton on a trip from Michigan to upstate NY years ago. I thought it was just east of Windsor.

I agree that is a little hike for a used motor. If I lived closer to Detroit I'd offer to go take a look at it for ya. It's about 1hr15 from Lansing. Too far by your rule.

Good luck finding a Minn Kota though, I love mine like my firstborn child.

Yeah, Hamilton is on the westerly tip of Lake Ontario.

I'm in no rush for one, so I'll just keep my eyes open. One will turn up sooner or later.....
