What size wire should I get for wiring up nav lights, horn, stereo, small bilge pump, etc.?

I'm looking for the most affordable way to do this properly.

Also, any recommendations about connectors? Should I splice, twist, and shrink fit the wires, or is there a better way?

Is 18 or 16 gauge big enough?

No on 18 gauge. 16 gauge is good for most boat circuits except high power equipment. No twist and heat shrink. Solder and heat shrink or water proof crimp style butt connectors can be used.
