Thanks everyone that offered comments and assistance with "The Beast!

But I'm crawling over into a corner now in the fetal position and admitting defeat on this project. Google the term "a fool and his money....." and you'll see my picture.....

When I went to look at her, she was covered, kept under a covered structure and I saw potential. Boy was I dead wrong!

The floor behind the driver and passenger area had some "give" in it so I removed the carpet only to find a 3' x 4' 1/8" layer of fiberglass.....that's all. The wood was rotted out and this was a poor patch job. None of the cross braces were left, only fiberglass filled with rotted wet wood. The previous owner had some spare seats and pedestals there in that spot when I looked at it so when I climbed inside, it never crossed my mind......

I spent the last 2 days stripping her down for a make over and removing that fiberglass in hopes of being able to repair it.

Foam is soaked and mildewed and all wood under floor is rotted. There's a 1" poly pipe runing from the front well to the bilge that leaks bad. The live wells are also cracked but it's hard to see until there's water in them and they begin to leak.

But what finally made me toss in the towel this afternoon was finding a stress crack from the transom along the hull toward the front for about 3 feet. It's also moving laterally as well as along the hull and upon further inspection up into the transom area which is completely closed in by the casting deck.

It became very evident after I put some water in the bilge to test the pump system and it sat all nite. It started coming apart literally in front of us this afternoon as the day got warmer. Pieces of fiberglass hull fell off as the water dripped more and more onto the driveway...... When I inspected the boat before I bought it it was not visible to me at all. There were scratches and such, but not this.

I've been told any repair from underside is just delaying the inevitable failure and dangerous situation. The inside isn't accesible for repair due to the way the boat is built. There's no way I'd chance safety or lives with this boat.

The 115HP Mercury with steering and trim is in great shape and runs very well and the VIP trailer is sound but ugly. It has new tires and needs repainted and new bunks.

I'm stripping every usable piece of hardware, wiring harnesses, gauges, etc. off of this mess. At least maybe I can recoup some of my money and use the parts on an ALUMINUM fishing boat project.

Wow dwhite. Who'da known? Glad you cut your losses when you did. There are even older fiberglass boats that would have been worthy of your effort, but this one must have been a bit of junk right out the gate. Either that or someone smacked something awful then covered it up.

I hear ya on the aluminum. Tinny's can only get SO bad! That's a real shame. Technically if you popped the cap on that one and grinded out all the rotted wood it could be repaired and rebuilt but it's probably not worth the $ or effort.

Re: GAME OVER - 1978 Cane Cutter Restore Is Now A Salvage

Thanks for the replies. After reading them I sat down with my CFO (aka Honey, Darling, The Mrs.) and we decided that it is unlikely we can recoup even 50% of our initial investment. So today I hauled her (the boat....not the Mrs....) to a shop in Odessa, TX (about 15 miles away) that specializes in fiberglass repair. They looked at "The Beast" and said it was all fixable and gave me a quote. I put down half the total job estimate (which was about 75% labor and 25% materials) and left her at their yard.

They're going to pull her off the trailer, remove the motor, pull the cap, add an additional stringer and cross braces, replace the floor, fix the hull, and check to see if the transom needs redone.

The estimate was very reasonable and the shop was highly recommended. They're about 2 weeks out before they can get to mine and they said it'll take a week to do the work. When they pull her off the trailer I'll pick it up, replace the bunks, rollers, and repaint her.

Stay tuned.

Thanks,
Doug

Wow.

Sounds like you may have a month to get ready... why don't you ask the shop if they can get you your trailer (I'm sure they can put the beast on blocks or a spare in their yard) and get going on the trailer while you are waiting?

This way you can work on that slowly and have it ready for the pickup. Since I am sure the weather forecast in TX has no snow -- like up here in OH!! May help you feel like you are a step closer.

Good luck - keep us posted.

Glad your able to get her fixed..That would KO me...

Guess that means though that somewhere, there is an abused, abandoned tinny that needs your help, Won't you sponsor a classic boat today? For just a few dollars a month, you too can make a difference in a boat's life...
Please write or call today, they are waiting for you.....What are you waiting for? :D

No snow here in West Texas right now, it was 90 today......

They have boats in their shop now getting work done and it'll be a week before they can pull her off the trailer with only the owner and one hand working right now. So next week I'll pick the trailer and get to work on it.

I'd guess that most people who let a boat get to that point are blissfully ignorant of what is going on. The seller is as likely to be incompetent as a crook.

Well,it's yours now.It will be fixed, you will get to use it as you wanted to when you began. You will have to pay a little more,or a lot,but just think if you got an aluminum boat that needed fixed up,add the costs together as you already bought this one,add the time that you had into both projects, and I think that you will realize that you came out ahead.lol.Thats how I do it.It makes me feel much better.Have fun in your new boat.

I'd rather put the cash in the boat rather than in a lawyer's pocket.

Just kidding. The kid that sued me never paid a dime in lawyers fees, but ended up paying in the long run. Had the kid done the same as you, the money he put into his lawsuit would have easily fixed the problem....which by the way was, (in my opinion), caused by his lack of boating experience.

Different situations. Most iboaters would do what you did (without a survey). Assess the condition at purchase, re-assess after purchase, and then accept the situation. You might have found out that you had a gem on your hands, not a salvage job.

Glad the motor is in great shape! Look forward to seeing what you do with it.

Re: GAME OVER - 1978 Cane Cutter Restore Is Now A Salvage

I have to say I'm more than a bit curious as to what a shop would charge for such a repair?

A buddy of mine, who has no mechanical or body work skills at all, bought a well abused and well rotted boat a year ago, took it to the local boat shop, and was shocked beyond all belief at what they wanted to just do the transom and floor, and that was a center console.
I must say I convinced him to find another boat, it was in no way worth even the cost of the materials as the boat was a low end, abused, underpowered wreck that also needed or soon would need a new motor, and new trailer.

I was even shocked at the labor estimate he got, and at that, it was open ended. I've seen similar estimates for similar jobs. All from shops that I know do excellent work. I have an aluminum boat in which the last owner paid to have the floor and transom replaced, both completely encased in glass and resin, and they charged him just shy of $5,000 two years ago, and he stripped the boat bare first leaving only the old wood panels loose in the boat for templates. ( I bought the boat after he ran out of money and am completing it myself).

She's gone. Hasta la vista baby! Sold the Cane Cutter project bass boat I've been working on this morning. Boat, trailer, motor lock stock and barrel!

Taking delivery on a 2009 Tracker Pro 16 on Tuesday. Hmmmm...now how can I customize this puppy?...........
