Hello all!! As of now i own a 1970 18 hp evinrude. mechanically it is great. i've had some carb and fuel pump problems but thanks to this site they are gone now. my question is, i have the oppertunity to purchase a 1973 25 hp electric start evinrude. will i notice much difference between the two? my 18 was on a 14 ' fiberglass boat. it pushed it very well, but i sold it and bought a 15' wide aluminum boat. the max hp rating for the boat is 25. well oddly enough a buddy of mine just happens to be pretty much giving away his old 25. i havent had any problems with my 18 but I like the fact that the 25 is electric start. will i feel much difference in horsepower between them and any common problems with 25 hp's that i might come across?? also, do the electric start motors self charge the battery?? any info would be great!! i guess im asking should i buy it !!?? im sure i could sell the 18 for more than my friend is asking.

Re: another 18 hp and 25 hp question

my '70 25 hp is electric start... I'm pretty sure the '73's were the exact same, they changed to the larger block later I think. I've never had an 18 hp, so I can't compare, by my 25 hp has the smaller displacement, and seems to like to rev, so should be propped accordingly. The later 25s had larger displacement had more torque. My 1970 does not charge the battery, I doubt that the '73 does either. Not a biggie... Battery lasts a long time...

Common gripes are breaking the starter mounting brackets off the block. If you do buy it, make sure none of the mounting bolts are working loose. If so, locktite them. Tighten them carefully, b/c the little aluminum "fingers" on the block that are tapped are easily stripped, and it is a large PITA to have a fix that works. Mine had this issue when I bought it... I tried keen inserts (sorta like a helicoil), that lasted a season, but then the fingers broke clean off and I had to take it to a machinist who made up a new mounting bracket that used different mounting points. That fix has held.

If it's going cheap... why not get it, and after you try it, keep the one you like better?

7 additional HP on top of 18 is better than a third more power. You should be able to feel that, and my guess is that you will like it a lot! Especially with the right price.

DO IT!! :)

My son, and I have both the 18, and 25. We have to use a small 10" pitch prop on the 25 to out perform the 18. The 18 is a 1958, 25 is a 1975. This is using either engine on the same boat. No, you won't see much of a performance gain.

Re: 1970 Evinrude 25 hp shifting problems

Firstly, I am new here and apologize if this thread all ready exists but I couldnt find it. I bought an 1970 Evinrude 25 (25002E) and it is in good shape. I got it running fine but it wont engage into gear consistently. Sometimes I can get into R and sometimes F. I tried shifting manually at the selector on the motor. Is there an easy answer out there to narrow the problem down? I am ordering a manual today but thought I would ask to see if fixing it is worth it.

Re: another 18 hp and 25 hp question

Check the shift rod connector. Open tab on the leg and verify it's properly connected.

edit:

While turning the prop:
Shift into Neutral and the prop should be free turning.
Shift into Reverse, the rod should move down and prop will stop turning.
Shift back into Neutral, once again, the prop should be free turning.
Shift into Forward and the rod should move up and the prop will stop turning.
