Replacing points with IgnitorII kit

I just bought a 1981 Century 1810 with a Mercruiser 228 and the dealer told me that I might want to junk the points on the boat and convert to a Ignitor II kit, coil, wires. Has anyone done this. I did this on a 1965 Ford Falcon 260V-8 but never on a boat. Any thoughts?

Some would say why but I like them. Definitely get the II version though. Motor starts easier and you do not have the the points to pit and wear. Go for it. Get the Blaster coil too. I'm not sure Pertronix makes a suitable wire set for marine. Auto wires go down over the top. Marine wires have to go down the front corners of the heads and down under the exhaust manis.

Save the point plate, in a baggie, with the air sucked out of it. You could always slap it in in and emergency.

points were used successfully for years. maintain them and you'll be fine.
