spring tune up on my '93 Maxum...is there an automotive (ie. available at auto parts stores) equivalent to the dist cap (and possibly rotor)? i'd rather not have to wait for an online order to arrive.

if not, is the following part # the right one?

393-9459Q 1

i see that some have the "Q" and some dont...

thanks in advance!

Ayuh,....
Seeing that the 3.0l was Never used in a Car,+ the Igntion is Marine rated,...
I'd think the answer is Nope...

But,....
If you find the Part # here at iboats for Your parts,...
Napa carries the same line with the same part #s....

Re: 3.0L mercruiser distributor cap - interchangeability?

update:

i ordered what i thought was the right cap online....well, it wasnt. there was no picture so it was hard to make sure. i was pretty far off, considering that MY distributor cap has ports for 2 electronic connections (i dont know what they are for)...the one i ordered had none.

any help would be appreciated. motor is 3.0L alpha 1, S/N OF015754, and like i said - there are 2 connections made just below the cap that require cap cutouts/notches. the cap installed has no markings other than "Delco" and i think J1171 or something...but this number was on the starter also so i dont think it means much.

i would have already taken this boat to a mechanic, but my trailer isnt safe on big roads and i'm not aware of any mobile mechanics in my area.

thanks in advance yall.

if the correct cap is the one in bondos pic.... then you have est.
If the cap you first order didn't look like that... then you ordered the one for points.

You could try this part# out of Napa by Wells DR934 for the cap and DR921 for the rotor cap it exact for my 96 3.0LX EST ignition.

When you find the right parts make sure you record the numbers and where you found it for future reference. It makes things easier in the future when you replace them you won't be searching around for things. oops! has a 140 with a aftermarket distributor and we spent the whole day yesterday shopping for parts we had previously replaced.

What exactly is the problem ??????? I sure hope you ordered a rotor at the same time.

PS, the SN you posted is for a 4.3L (V6) engine with Thunderbolt IV ignition.

Re: 3.0L mercruiser distributor cap - interchangeability?

Hi all,

I am new to boating and this is my first post :)

I have a 2004 BR175 Bayliner with Merc 3.0L Alpha I. I was checking out the motor before a trip this w.e and I found a crack in the rotor. The trip was next day so I had replace it quickly. I was able to find the parts at these local auto-parts stores.

At a local Valley auto-part, DR459T (cap) and DR327T (rotor) are made by Tru-Tech and are made in USA.

Autozone parts are cheaper but I am not sure where they are made.
They're made by Duralast, DR934 (cap) and DR921 (rotor).

Material wise, they looked identical to the original marine rated parts. From the helpful rep. at Valley auto-parts, the motor/block is a GM 4 cyl. 1985-1987. One look at the original cap, he was able to pull the parts right of the shelves without any further questions.

Hope this helps.
Teh
