OK so First let me say that this is a really really great site, and have learned so much already from just reading the forms. Second this is my first boat (sorry).

So, driving through the counrty of MN and I come accrost this boat for sale. 1000$ 115 hp merc out board late 70' early 80' blue strip on the side. 6 cyl.

1000$ tells me that even tho they said it was working the chances are that it's not going to but for the price (boat, trailor, motor) I can take the hit plus this at the very least is going to be a really good learning exsperance.

Problem- It wont start- :p

I was working on it with my father in law who own's his own car shop and is a boat owner himself for some years, so i'm not winging this alone, but he "isn't a out-board merc by anymeans" as he puts it. When spraying flue in on the carbs it putters kinda runs as long as i keep the key turned and someone spraying mixed gas (50:1) right into the carbs.

checked the fuel pump. everything there is working, looks like things are almost new as far as this goes.

looking at the carb- they look clean as far as no visible buildup, even inside towards the cyl.

spark plugs where taken out and cleaned and tested for spark all 6 worked. However the batery is just a 500 Cold Crank I'm not sure if this is really enough for this eng.

Have the muffs on and am ready for any advice? except for take it back or sell it. I'm in this till the bitter end if that's what it comes down to.

You need to do a compression test on all 6 cylinders. They should be above 100 PSI and within 10% of each other. The Cranking battery should be 725 CCA or higher. It needs to spin the motor at 300 rpms at least. Make sure the fuel tank doesn't have debris or old fuel or varnish in it, and make sure your primer bulb stays hard after pumping it up. Use 93 Octane fuel or Super Unleaded. Hope this helps. I have a 82 Mercury Inline 6, and runs like a champ.

It sounds very much like the carbs are gummed up. After you confirm the compression is good, get 3 carb gaskets sets (gaskets are cheap, but bring the serial num to the dealer, so you get the correct ones). Remove the carbs, and soak 'em in some carb cleaner, and blow out all the passages. Now install the carbs, and set the idle mixture adjustment needles to 1-1/2 turns out from lightly seated. Hook up some fresh 50::1 premixed fuel and the flush device and choke her up good. it should start and run well at fast idle. Don't mess with the timing at this point.

Report on progress, and I can advise on how to set idle mixture. You will then need to do a link and synch before you use it.

BTW - If the motor has a single coil and distributor, it is pre 1979. six coils make it 1979 or newer.

Sounds like a plan, give me a few days probbly the weekend to get somethings done..taking apart carbs just how much is really involved. Not saying that I'm not willing to give it a shot but i'm guessing i'm going to want to do this in a short time frame so i don't forget where the parts/screws all go.

Renegade,

While I don't have your particular motor, I recently disassembled my carb for cleaning/new carb kit. I was extremely surprised at how easy it was. I didn't have a manual, nor did I need one. These carbs are much less complicated than, say an edelbrock for your car. I was intimidated until I opened it up. Really wasn't much to it. You might check your float too, mine was completely full of gas. I have no idea how it got in there. There is no pinholes and the float has been sitting on my workbench for two weeks and it is STILL full of gas.

Anyway, tear that carb open and toss it/its pieces in some B-12 chemtool for a little while. The fact that it'll run when you shoot fuel into the carb tells me that you definitely have a fuel delivery problem.

Disassembly and cleaning of the carbs is not difficult. However, that motor is very compact, and it will look like a real PIA to get the carbs off. it is not too bad. Disconnect the electrical plug, remove the cowling wrap and top piece. Remove the choke solenoid wire (if equipped) Remove the three top rubber mount nuts, the top two stainless bolts, and the four bottom rear bolts, all in the cowling support. Remove the starter wire and supports. Remove the starter. Push the front cowling support out of your way, pull the fuel liune off the fuel pump and remove the carb covers and fuel lines as an assembly. Make sure you do not drop any of the float levers. Now unbolt and remove the carbs one at a time. They are a tight fit, but don't loosen any of the timing settings. The Carbs are connected together with a wimpy plastic rod, which will break if you are not careful. Clean 'em up, inspect the floats for cracks or disolving parts, install new gaskets, set the floats and reassemble.

Hey Peoples!!

I bet you all thought i forgot!! Nope just took me awhile to get this done.

So it works now!! A side from the carb..there was also the fact that the idle throttle was not moving as much. And how we had started it was priming the bulb till fuel came out of the carb, spaying mixed fuel into the carb as cranking and then having the idle throttle moved as far as it would go..it worked and started to pull it's own fuel and stayed running.

So now I have another problem. No water came out of the pee'r. I only let it run about 30 seconds at a time (did it twice) because of this. I wasn't wanting to blow the engine i just got running over a cooling problem. I think I will start a new post for this however.
