Ok I got my 3 hp Johnson sea horse Model JW-10 Serial No 1107843 have no Idea how old it is but It runs, put new plugs in added 50 to one Gas,Cleaned out the Fuel line, but Can not get it to Idel very long until it stops,What is the Gap on the plugs supposed to be and is the gas mixture correct.
Water pump works great and when its running it is sweet sound.

See the item "Awakening a sleeping outboard" on the " Engine FAQs" Board. (Select from "the Repair and maintenance" index above)

Re: Capt Ron needs help

I don't find the site hard to use at all. First of all your post will get more responses if it is in the right forum. Your motor is a JW-10 3 1952-54 and should be run on 24:1 fuels mix. The carb probably need rebuilding and it is has not had the coils changed they probably need it too. the point gap is .020 and the plug gap is .035. change the impeller whether it is pumping water or not. If it's been sitting awhile or just been awhile since it has been changed there is a danger of it being brittle and breaking apart. clogging the lines or passages and overheating the motor.

Well . . . in a word, yes, it might be you . . . You posted this in non-Repair and then asked repair questions. I moved this to the Johnny-Rude forum where I think you will get some help. Good luck and welcome aboard!

Re: Capt Ron needs help

I don't want to give you a complex Captain but your Title sucks. You should try to state your problem and Horse power in the title instead of "help". We assume you need help but you will draw a more knowledgeable group with a better title. Enough of that stuff. Welcome aboard. There are many here who will help you with an incredible amount of information and proven knowledge. At the top of this forum there is a subject " Top Secret File" Have a look through there and you will find some useful information and maintenance suggestions. Now that you have your year I would strongly suggest you buy an OMC repair manual for your specific motor. It will give you a lot of information and a knowledge base that will make doing repairs far easier. They can be found on eBay for a reasonable price. Keep in mind not too many of us enjoy typing and some of the procedures given in the manual are important but would take far too long to explain via this forum. Best of luck with your motor and please don't be afraid to ask for help. Rick.

Re: Capt Ron needs help

As a general rule, the best way to get help is to start by posting in a relevant forum section, with the make, model and year of your motor included. All of these things can go in the title line.

In the body of your post, state the model number of the motor, if you know it, and then describe the problem you are having.

There are a few members here who know a great deal about a wide variety of engines, but most of us tend to reply to threads about the ones we are most familiar with. By posting the title as I suggested, you will maximize the number of potential advisors, because they will immediately recognise a subject that they can be of help on.

Welcome to iboats!

PS: I don't know if I am typical here, but I also like make/model/year specific titles because I like to read threads that I might not be able to help much on. I do that just because I always end up learning something about motors that I haven't worked on. Sometimes this info is just a matter of interest and sometimes it becomes very useful because it helps me to understand the wider lineup of OMC motors better.

Re: Capt Ron needs help

50:1 gas is nowhere near enough oil. The original spec was 16:1, one half pint of oil per gallon. That was later changed to 24:1. Don't go any leaner than that.

Re: Capt Ron needs help

Multple posting on the same subject and motor are frowned upon, your 3 threads have been merge together. better for you and does not waste contributors time dealing with multiple post.

I realized it sounded as though we were coming down hard on you. I hope your skin is thick enough to overlook (but learn from) the many corrections sent your way. This is a very good site and there are so many "Top Guns" who know so much about OMC engines. Hang in here and again sorry about all the scolding. Rick.
