Ayuh,... How are you finding TDC,..?? Is this on #1,..??
It really doesn't matter Where the rotor is pointing when you Start,...
It's where it's pointed when you're Done that counts,....

You could look in the Manual,...
But,...
I think they Assume that you already have the Basic Mechanical Abilities before you start....

To Find Tdc I Bumped The Motor Intill The Harmonic Balancer Was @ 0 Then I Made Shure The Piston Was Up. When I Droped The Dis. In The Rotor Was Facing 5:30 On The Cap It Also Is Hitting The #1 Plug Wire. Is This The Right Way To Do It.

Well said John. IMHO forums are for people to ask questions so they can LEARN. If they already knew everything they wouldn?t have to ASK. My advice is to keep on asking, keep on learning and take no notice of the smart-azzed comments.

John - it's great that a 15 yr old is learning about engines. A couple of things to comment on...

1. You might have the engine 180 degress off time. When the timing mark lines up you will either be on the correct compression stroke... or 180 degress off. The mark lines up twice for every time the plug fires. You will need to pull the plug from the #1 cylinder and see if compression is building as the mark lines up. If you turn the engine over you will be able to see and feel what I am talking about.

2. Notice that Bondo has over 20,000 posts. Do a search and you will see that he is one of the most helpful members. Sometimes we all have days where we are a little short - but if you want to continue receiving help, then you need to be careful about how to respond.... 15 yrs old or not. ;)

you've already been enlightened. but i will make the comment that i don't think bondo was being sarcastic at all. he was letting you in on the fact that a service manual is an indispensable tool. in it you'll find much needed info in it. including how to put the dist. back on the engine when everything has been turned and you have no reference point. step by step instructions i might add...

your service manual is the best tool in your toolbox... w/o it. you won't be able to fix hardly anything on your boat.. you have to know the facts. and these are found in the service manual.

First off thankyou everyone you are a lot of help. I redid my TDC with the papertowl method "that was a great way to do it" It was right it wasnt 180 out. My local dealer got the new distributor cap and button in i installed it and it started to fire but would not stay running. I think my timing is off! My dealer ordered me a manual today but it wont be in till mon or tue. With a timing light what should the timing be set @ Again i thank everyone for the help! By the way the picture was great!!

You mention "started ,but would not stay running" That is not normally a dist. problem.what type of ign. system are you using? points/electronic?
If it runs holding the key in start pos. and dies in run pos. you have a electrical issue

No points thunderbolt electronic ign. What i ment to say is its having trouble starting, trying to fire but it will not run. I got it running a few times but it sounds like a crank bearing is shot!!! Im thinking about buying a new 305 or even upgrading to a 350 Just wondering what is the difference between a car and a marine motor. Is it just the cam.
