I called or emailed Petit, Interlux and Blue Water to get paint color cards of their top side paints. Today I have all the envelopes, and finally had a chance to open and read them.

Blue Water sent a nice 25 page pamphlet with color samples and information on all their different paints. More info than you get from the website.

Petit sent a two page color sample. The color chips on the page were smaller than my finger nail. And practially no indepth info on the products.

Interlux sent a 54 page booklet with the largest paint chips samples, indepth information on all the products, information on how to apply the products, what advantages one product had over another. There is also a CD that was in the pack I haven't played yet.

I have to admit that Interlux has the competition beat with information and color sampling. Blue water was next, and Petit was a distant third, in my assessment.

Interlux has a one part polyurethane top side (Bright Sides) color that matches the gel coat on the Bayliner almost perfectly. So I will most likely order an Interllux product.

The reason I'm making this post is to encourage members to contact the manufacturers of the products they are interested in. You might be surprised at the info that you get just for the asking, and you might also be surprised at which brands give you the best information to help you choose the right product.

It worked for me!

Mark, I couldn't agree with you more!!! Folks such as you and some other's that have spent countless hours on a project would be a little foolish just to run to the store and buy just 'anything' to finish it.
Can't begin to tell you how many hours I've searched and scrounged around just for the 'right' item.
Thanks for the tip and hope all of the future rebuilders or refinishers take heed. :D:D

Mark there is a world of difference between Bight Side's and Perfection..Perfection is a extremely wear resitant paint.

There is a world of difference between single and two part paint systems too . . . ;)

I am not commenting on Perfection at all, but I decided on single part for a variety of reasons. If that's your choice Mark, then I think you have forgotten Epifanes. Of course this is with no experience other than bad, but I am guessing that's me and not the paint so far  Check out this video before you decide. Epifanes Monourethane vs. Brightsides vs. Easypoxy You have to click the red "Video" tab in the middle of the page just below Interlux. That's what I based my decision on, seemed like the best compromise between the three.

Re: Petit, Interlux, Blue Water....

You guys are right, Perfection is top of the line. But it is a two part paint that I don't want to get involved with due to the health risks.

My application will be on a boat that is covered and sitting on a trailer most of the time. If it's on the water 30 days a year that will be a lot. So right now, ease of application, and color match are more important than a finish that will last 15 years vs 7-10 for the Brightside.

I was checking around the local paint shops, and no one was able to supply a one part polyurethane that they can tint to match the gel coat. So I'm going to go with a marine paint with as close a match as possible.

QC, I checked out that video and it is enlightening. I'm wondering if their chip test was done too soon. I would have waited a week, not just the day after dry. I'm going to get their color chart too.

Just spent the last 3 hours sanding and doing touch up glass work on the frames. I'm getting tired of working on them!!!! But I know the finish will only be as good as the prep. So work I must....

BTW, it was getting hot so I stripped down to my pants and put on the overalls. Even though I had no shirt on, and I was sanding away, none of it got through the suit and on my skin. But I could feel the breeze blowing through the suit. Next time out I won't worry about wearing just shorts under the suit. Comfortable and cool!
