I have a 1975 75hp evinrude (hustler) motor it seems that I threw a rod in the block,
I?m trying to remove the power head, I took all the bolts from the lower unit and all the attachment for the electrical and controls, but I cant separate lower unit from power head. is there a hidden bolt or the gasket is on good and tight can you help me.
Thank you

Re: Powerhead removal

you have the shift rod under the carbs to disconnect. there is a bell crank, loosen the center bolt, lets the bell crank spread, the outer half has a pin that goes thru the shift rod.

Re: Powerhead removal

On some motors you must remove the bolts from the lower unit (underside) and from the power head (topside) to get to them all. When I say lower unit I am talking about where the power head meets the upper flange of the midsection to be more specific. Sometimes there is also a few nuts that need to be removed to completely unfasten the power head. Look completely around the the power head and lower unit where they meet for any bosses that might indicate a bolt is there.

Re: Powerhead removal

There is one stud coming down from the rear crankcase half. It is in the middle and is accessed from the inside of the lower cowl, under the head. The nut on it is about a 1/2 inch.

If you look on the "cylinder and crankcase" parts diagram at www.shop.evinrude.com, for your motor (lookup by year and hp rating), its item #2 (stud) and item #49 (nut).

Don't feel bad - that stud has driven more than one backyard mechanic (including yours truly) crazy! BTW, the v4s have four of them, two on the rear crankcase half and two on the front half. The V6s appear to have two on the front crankcase half and none on the rear.

Welcome to iboats!
