Transom plate bolts$$$$$$

Will be putting the transom plate back on soon and noticed a few of the bolts seemed to be corroded. I looked both here at the iboats shop and on marineparts and they're pretty proud of those things - $22 to $24 each. That's getting a little spendy if you need to replace all 6. Standard zinc coated bolts aren't a good solution and typical grade 8 bolts don't have a corrosion resistant coating. Anyone have any ideas for reasonable priced replacements?

These are for a Volvo 130D with the 280 outdrive. Volvo part number is 943426.

A fastener supply store should be able to get you Stainless Grade 10 or high tension bolts no problem. They won't be cheap, but certainly not $20 a pop!

Hmm,

This could be an argument for Merc Vs Volvo.....

I replaced all 8 STUDS (7/16 X 4-3/4 IN.) on my Bravo III because the ones on the gimbal were a little corroded.

The Doug Russell list price is $6.99 ea and they're sold for $5.94 (online price)

My King Cobra used the "same" size nuts.....it's possible that the Merc studs will work for yours. Measure them and see if they're the same. Have a look at the thread size too

I wouldn't use stainless steel studs. (The OEM studs were not SS) Just use good cad plated high quality studs.

Any good supplier can get them! Here's an example. http://www.tacomascrew.com/

Cheers,

Rick

Thanks - I don't know why I ddn't think of stainless and a fastener supply house. Just curious, what to use for a thread lubricant to prevent galling with stainless? When I was in Uncle Sams' canoe club, we used neolube, which was graphite suspended in isopropyl alcohol. What's available in the commercial world?

Rick,
I must have been writing my reply when you posted. For the Volvo transom plates, these are carrige bolts and not studs but I see what you're saying. Now I'm curious - why or why not stainless? And thanks for the link to Tacoma Screw. I noticed thay have a store in Pasco and I'll be in the TriCities area this week so might just take one with me and see what they say.

Stainless bolts are relatively weak when it comes to tensile strength. A steel bolt that is coated properly will give you the strength and corrosion protection you need.

You will probably need a specialized size carriage bolt for your gimbal. they come in a lot of different sizes.....

Tacoma Screw might be able to get Grade 8 bolts for you in the right length.

Another place that might be able to get them is High Strength Bolt Co in Tacoma. Volvo doesn't make their own bolts! You just need to make sure that you get cadmium plated bolts.

Suzukichopper is right. SS bolts are not anywhere near as strong as a grade 8 steel bolt. (of course they don't have to be all that strong for a gimbal though...My Bravo gimbal is only torqued to about 25ft-lbs)

Going away from stock replacement may change the galvanic properties enough to cause corrosion problems especially in salt water. I'm just sayin'....there are reasons to try to get what was on there from the mfg-er.

Wow - you're not going to believe this. After picking of the old caulk and paint and then checking the thread size and diameter - determined they were just grade 2, cadmium plated, SAE bolts. Nothing special at all.

Well that gives you plenty of options.

I would look for the good high quality cad plated bolts. Since they're carriage bolts you probably don't have to worry a lot about length as long as they're long enough and don't run into anything else. $20 is pretty rediculous.
