Waste water argument ?

On my cruiser, I use a porta pot that I empty into my sewer at home. My boat also has a holding tank that holds the gray water. The holding tank, I have pumped out at the marina. Other guys at the dock told me that I can just dump my dish and shower water overboard. To me and through my research, this is not permitted or I'm just reading things wrong? I know that I wouldn't want to swim in the water if everyone dumped their gray water in the lake.

Grey water dumping is strictly forbidden in some waters, but not all if memory serves. But let's look at it this way, do you really want to do that to the waters you swim/fish/ski in?

What about grey water?

Grey water is the water discharging from your sink and shower, while black water is the sewage/water discharging from a toilet. In the United States, there are no federal requirements for the containment of grey water. However, in Canada, and in some inland lakes, there may be additional restrictions. Please check your local cruising guide or with your local state boating agency for more details. Are You In Compliance?

On our lake we can dump grey water overboard but there are strict regs on the type of soap/chemicals/laundry powder etc etc. Everything has to be dolphin friendly (to be more precise - trout friendly).

We don't like doing it, all our outlets are directed to the black water tank which gets pumped out to the landbased sewage system.

To know for sure, I'm going to email the Muskingum Watershed Conservancy District that control the lakes. I think I will still do as I have been by having it pumped out at the marina. Its the others that don't give a hoot on what they do.

The lake does have a requirement that any boat with a holding tank must pay a seasonal pump out fee. I might as well get my monies worth :D.......SS

BTW,,,,,,,,,,,,Thanks shipmates :D

I prefer the gubmint dump my sewage into great lakes for me.
With all the rain we got here the last week I think Milwaukee dumped oh 150 million gallons of raw sewage into lake Michigan.

The Army Corp built and maintain the dam, but the MWCD manages the lakes and parks.

BTW Ken, hopefully in a couple of weeks, I'll be free to get your bellows and impeller put in. Did you get a gasket set for the outdrive to the gimbal unit?

Re: Waste water argument ?

All I can tell you is grey water is ok in near coastal waters and once you are 7 miles off shore you can dump it all in grey and black.
