For a while I could get this thing to hit a lick every once in a while. I tinkered with the points, set at .020, still not getting it to run at all. I swapped condenser with one that runs fine... the other one runs fine with the condenser out of this motor. The sparkplug wire is in good shape. The other motor gets fire readily every time I turn the flywheel pretty fast by hand... this one sometimes does and sometimes doesn't but when it does fire it is a strong blue arc. My best guess is possibly the coil is malfunctioning... I simply don't have a clue... I've already rebuilt the carb thinking it was flooding out...but it simply acts like it is not getting fire at all now and will not even hit when I pull the rope. Any suggestions?

I think you are on the right track. Sounds like a bad coil to me, too.

a coil will usually fire or not. maybe the coil but more likely dirty points still? how are you checking spark?

I'm checking the spark by grounding the plug tightly against the fins of the cylinder or a bolt on the cover.. .the same way I do it on the other engine. I've used emery cloth to clean the points... they don't appear to align exactly but that is not uncommon... I think I'll bite the bullet and at least put in new points and condenser. Damn thing isn't worth the money or trouble....

Two points and a dog biscuit for freddyray!!!! Tho' I had used emery cloth to clean the points WHILE INSTALLED.... it didn't run at all.. I took them completely out, saw they were a little pitted, sanded most of the pit out to get a smooth contact surface. Reinstalled and set points. Cranked on first pull and every pull after that until I put it in the water... hard to start because it's flooding but did get it going and ran like a charm once I got it above idle... also runs smooth at low speed, enough so I can troll. I've got a new needle seat coming so I'll fix the flooding problem and I'm sure it will be a good little motor to push this little boat. THANKS GUYS!!! it's always some stupid little something that we overlook that just drives us crazy with these cantankerous motors.
