Question is i want to repaint the motor but i whould like to stay with at least a close color
Any suggestions as to where to buy the color in spray cans? Don't have to be perfect but want it close-- I know it's white but not WHITE WHITE
THANKS---

Tempo is the "marine engine paint" manufacturer but very costly.

Automotive paint (single or two stage) works great and they can color match..... the key is in the prep work and should you sand completely through the original paint..... get a rattle can of zinc chromate primer to hit the bare spots.

Get some color chips from Home Dep. in the motor's color range. Hold it up against the motor and pick out the one you think is the closest.
Then go with that chip to Walmart and find a spray can close to the chip color. I think even rustoleum will have that shade of off white.
If still not satisfied go to the car parts store that has wider selection of spray paints.

Some of the Carquest stores have an actual automotive paint supply store as well. They can match any color and put it in a "rattle can" for you. It'll cost around $30 bucks a can but if you really want original color, that's one way to get there.

There is a local auto body paint store here that has a small hand held color analyzer they use to match paint color. If there is an auto paint store in you area that has one you will need to bring the outboard to them. They will go out and place the thing on the paint and somehow it tells them exactly what colors to mix together to get the color you need. Just be sure to have them test a spot that isn't faded or it will come out wrong. The store here will mix up what I need and put it into rattle cans.

Also, it is a non-destructive type of meter and can be used on brand new finishes.

I did it this way on the last Merc I painted. Was much cheaper than the Phantom Black my dealer had on the shelf.

Re: Factory Paint Color On Motor?

Hi Boss,

I copied the below info from this terrific website:

http://www.sschapterpsa.com/ramblings/OMC/OMC info.htm

Hope it helps!:D

"Repaint : You can purchase OMC original white paint #777171 specified for 1981-1990 at about $8.50 a can. Tempo #0204601, (Johnson White 1981 to Present) which is an aftermarket marine paint for about $1.00 less, or Krylon brand which is available in about any hardware or automotive store, in about any color you want, it may not match exactly the original color however, but it is less than 1/2 the price. I am torn between the Krylon brand & the original, as I like the idea of being able to touch up paint scratches if the need arises. Krylon's Ivory Gloss #1504, is very close to the standard white that most of many of these later motors were painted with. I have found with the OMC paint, do not try to do thick coverage or it MAY wrinkle. Do many thin coats. The only drawback using a non-original paint is that it may not be as resistant to gasoline & gooey black oil as the factory or replacement types."

I've had good luck using self-etching primer and Duplicolor paints (nearest match) from auto parts stores. Prep, time and patience are the keys to getting good results...save some for touch ups.

Re: Factory Paint Color On Motor?

I have that engine; I got lucky and got the exact can at Boater's World last week (my cover needs repainting most).
For the metal be sure to use the right primer and the right paint for aluminum. Due to electrolysis this is more important with motors than patio furniture!
That is a great engine, although mine is being a little cranky now, plus my tilt/trim leaks but it wold be worse if I bust it open.
