I am going to replace the thermostat and water pump on a E40ELCOB motor.
I don't know the history an the motor and just rebuilt the carbs and now I'm going to work on the cooling system. How hard is it to replace the thermostat and what and where is the bolt under the cowl to pull the lower unit apart.I have the book and it doesn't really show you what bolt.Do you think I'm doing the right thing by replacing the thermostat also?

If this is a salt water motor you may have problems removing the bolts holding the head cover that holds the thermostat & relief valve & spring ,in place at the bottom of power head. The bolts on the bottom are kind of har dto get to but can be done. Let us know how it goes.As far as the water pump goes, remove shift linkage under the lower carb.Remove four bolts, Two on each side of gearcase. One in front trim tab. Lower unit should slide right down. If you remove starter it is easier to see the shift linkage.

OEM manual would be a great help to you. Yes I think you should give the cooling system a complete service.

The motor from what I was told was only used in fresh water.I'm hoping the bolts come out easy.As far as the bolt for the shaft under the crowl.I wonder if its easier to pull the bottom carb than pulling the starter?

Bob, i change atleast one impeller a week. i have just found it faster, easier, to pull the carbs, and starter. it also give you a chance to clean and put a rebuild kit in the carbs at the same time. why do the labor twice.

Hello,I just changed the thermostat this morning and it went pretty easy. When I pulled the cover off there wasn't a thermostat in the engine.I cleaned everything up real good and blow out the tel tale and put a line thought it to make sure she was good and clear.Put it all back together and started her up.The water came out of the tel tale real good, much stronger then it did before I put it in.Do you think that it wasn't as strong of a stream because there was no thermostat in it.
Next time I get some time it's off to the impeller lol
Thanks For all the help you give me
Bob
