I Have a 1984 70 hp evinrude that has me and everyone else stumped. underload it will only go like two miles an hour if you give it more gas it will stall. There is new gas and oil (mixed 50-1) new fuel lines all new T's. fuel pump is fine does nothing when you pump the ball when underload. tryed gas cap off,its not vapor locked. took carbs off twice and cleaned everything including all jets. It is getting gas just fine. I checked the reeds they look great. I put in all new spark plugs, They are all throwing a bright blue spark! The compression is Great!
What I got it down to is the middle cylinder, whenever you put it in gear underload and cover up the top or bottom carb it stalls. But not when you cover up the middle carb or disconnect the plug wire it just keeps on running the same.
could it be a coil??? But it sparks wile cranking over??

Some one Please help!!! I just want to shoot this motor.

i have had some problems like that mine will do fine and then do what your engine has been doing. Today I found a plug wire that was bad I hope thats was my problem.

I really dont know what to tell you. But coils will do that, and I had a cdi box do that to, but dont hold that to me. Good luck

Ok today I took my middle coil and swaped it with my bottum one, but the problem stayed with the number two cylinder. the #2 cylinder is sucking good. My compression is up over 120 psi!!! could it be the powerpack? stator? or the rectifier? Does anyone know how to check them to see if they are bad?

I had an 82 model Erude 70 with the same problem. I found the main jet was clogged (on the middle cylinder, too), and also the ground wire on one of the coil packs was loose - I just happened to catch it sparking one night while running the motor. Check that main jet closely and make sure it isn't clogged.
