Hi everyone im new to this forum. I just purchased a montgomery ward sea king with a 40hp sea king outboard. Im having trouble finding out about what year this boat was made. The serial# on the hull is 61-8757 model 9006 The motor is made by gale industries for montgomery ward and its model# is GG18744 serial # 16X804479. Any info on this boat would be greatly appreciated, where or if parts are available. Does anyone know what this boat or motor is worth thanks.

Well, the motor is a 61 Gale 40hp...reverse the first two numbers of the serial number to get the year. Someone who knows those boats will probably happen along to tell you the year on it...could be the hull serial # shows the year. Pix would go a long way in determining value...hard to say without seeing.

Re: Sea king

The motor is very similar to the Evinrude/Johnsons same years. shares most parts except cosmetics. Routine parts are readily available. Some right here at iboats.some ebay venders have excellent parts compatibility in there listings.

Whatever you paid for it is what it's worth. I might give you a bit more for it because I like the looks of them.

I don't know of a way to look up Sea King boat years. However, odds are very high that the boat matches the outboard's year. Wards sold the combination, so that was probably how it was purchased.

It would be nice to keep the two together, just for grins. As long as the outboard has good compression (80psi or higher, with little difference between the two cylinders), you should be able to get your outboard going without too much trouble.

Model #: GG18744
Serial #: 16X813434

Compression: Top cylinder ~80+ psi, bottom cylinder ~90+ psi

Electric start solenoid is toasted, should be easily replaced.
Spark is weak (compared to new motors), but I'm told this is normal.
Water pump impeller is rotted - the search for this begins today.

Some of the carb adjustment knobs are worn/busted, but repairable.

I just rebuilt the hubs of the original 1961 Holsclaw trailer:
The hubs are just about irreplaceable, so I treated them respectively.
Bearings/Races: 1.25" inner (Timken LM67010/LM67048), .75" outer (Timken LM11910/LM11949)
Seals: SKF CRW1 R 13738, 1781 Bearing Buddy dust covers
New 8" galvanized rims (5 bolt pattern) and LoadStar tires (5.70x8 C)
I'm told that Monroe still makes a shock that will fit, but I don't have a part # yet.

The hull, deck and transom are solid. There are a few spidercracks in the gelcoat, which is fairly oxidized.

Weak spark - coils often crack on these old OMCs. Pretty cheap and easy to replace (once you get the flywheel off). New coils and condensers and set the points and you'll likely be flyin'.
