I pulled off the carb (Solex), cleaned it up from the two years sitting without running. Reinstalled and here is the trouble: It will only start when I have the throttle forward. It will run for about 20 seconds and backfire out of the carb with a mist of fuel. When I start in nuetral It will crank and then spit up fuel out of the carb. I have the prop in a trash can full of water. I have also changed the plugs and wires, cleaned the distributor cap. Oil change also.
I ask for your help on this with any suggestions on what to do next.

Thanks to you all in advance,
Mike

How long have you owned this boat? Have you ever run it before?
Reason I ask, is that it doesn't have a choke. It will take some throttle jocking to keep it running till it warms up.
You may also need a full tuneup after setting. Points, condenser, set dwell and timing. What condition is the timing belt in?

Re: Volvo AQ131A Starting Problems

Owned for about two weeks now. Plan on taking it out on Tuesday after work to try the throttle jockey thing( with another boat in trail) I know that it will stall out there too. When I have it in the tank it will runn while in gear and then burp out fuel. Its seems as if it is getting too much fuel the way that it spits up fuel out of the carb. belt looks fine, nice and taught.
Thanks for the reply.

Is the engine temp up to 180? or 190? (yea, they run that hot) and still not running right? If it is, there is no sense going to the water if you can't make it work on land in a tank or on muffs.

Re: Volvo AQ131A Starting Problems

Welcome.

Sounds to me like your headed back to the carb, as you said, too much fuel.

One suggestion, try not to throw parts at it even though you may want to change them in the future. Get it running first, then replace parts slowly so you keep track of what you change between running the boat. Just a thought.

Keep us posted, we'll help when we can.:)

Good Luck!!!

Re: Volvo AQ131A Starting Problems

Thank you for your suggestions Don and the PO. I will definately not spend any more money on parts. I just wish that I knew more about Carbs. From what I have been told, the Solex is very simple. I will try any and all solutions that I get. I have the book, so I am good there. Keep throwin at me guys. Good Sunday to you all.

Re: Volvo AQ131A Starting Problems

I'm having similar problems, just got the carbs rebuilt, dual solex 44 on a 1980 aq145a. If I pump the throttle she'll sorta run and i have to keep pumping it or it'll stall, if it runs at all. flames and fuel shoot back up out of the carb and it even backfired twice. the carb guy says he'd done hundreds of these and he seemed very knowlegeable about them so I doont think the carbs are the problem. they said the carbs were in pretty rough shape, stuck needle valve, rusty accelerator diaphram, loose venturis and "laquer" all over.
what should i check next timing, distributor/ignition?
Thanks guys

ReelDeel, I had the same problem after rebuilding the carb. I found out that I had put in the wrong gasket on the carb where the lower and middle parts come together and there was an air passage basically plugged. After installing the right gasket she runs awesome! Hope this helps.
