88' 15hp johnson pull cord will not go back in

I pulled the pull cord out and it won't go back in. It still works for the last few inches but most of the cord will not coil back in. Did the spring break? Any ideas? I do have the manual for the motor. Thanks

Difficult to know from here but it would seem so.Manual probably explains the repair.I don't even know if its a coventional recoil or a pinion gear type.

Probably the spring broke but your book will give you good direction on how to replace it. Could also be the tag coil of the spring sucked into the housing. If it did you can fix that. If it didn't suck into the housing, you could try some WD40 to see if that will loosen up the gum well enough for it to work fine again. Best of luck. Rick.
