My barber gave me his 9.5 Evinrude (M-9422S Ser. E05371) which he reports was found underwater. He doesn't know for how long. It will not turn over. I've taken out the spark plugs and inserted Kroil into the cylinders. What should I do next?:)

Re: sunk

I would remove the head and see what the cylinders look like.

If they're pitted, I would throw it back in!

Being underwater in fresh water does not actually do damage, not unless the engine was hot and running when it took its dunk.Being taken out of the water and not being drained and started or at least turned over with very liberal amounts of oil being put in the cylinders and crank case to prevent rusting will do damage
Your next step should be a conversation with your barber to find out what exactly happened and what was done afterwards.
Anyway, don't throw it back in the water. Even if it is not viable, you can clean it up and part it out

I agree with tashasdaddy. If a motor isn't restarted within seconds of being submerged, it's very likely rust damge has set in to the moving parts, but what the heck, it doesn't hurt to pull it apart and see for sure. Even if it is damaged, you only need to replace the powerhead. The rest of the motor should be fine. It's likely, you could find another running powerhead through the AOMCI or through one of the guys here.

I agree, it is probably junk. But if you want to take it apart to see what makes it tick, you sure picked a doozy. Talk about a learning experience!!

exactly! These 9.5'ers are fun to work on, but when they're running right, they are good little motors. One problem that I found that is common on them is the boot inside of the motor leg, about half way down tends to break apart and leak. When they do that, then they don't idle right.
