I?ve got a 88 16? Four Winns with the 3.0L OMC Cobra that is leaking well almost pouring in water at the lower part of where the stern drive meets the transom. When I put in the water at first I thought I forgot the plug it was coming in so fast. I pulled the boat back out and later I filled the bilge with water form a hose and took a picture of it leaking out around the bottom of the mount. When it was in the water I could see only the general area that the water was coming from, not the exact spot. Hopefully that isn?t too vague and the photo helps. What I?m I up against here? Do I need to pull the stern drive, the motor, I?m not real sure? Thanks for your help in advance.

Drive off, motor out, transom hsg off. Check transom for rot. It's the seal between the transom hsg and transom that's leaking.

Welcome to iboats.
Is this boat new to you? You might have a rotten transom with that much water leaking. I dont think you will be able to just fix the leak.

Not sure what kind of boat you have there, but I just went through the same experience, and my engine goes back in tomorrow (into a brand new engine compartment with all new wood, including the transom).

It's lots of work, but it's not the end of the world, and I'm one helluva lot smarter now than I was before I bought this boat.

Re: OMC Sterndrive/transom leak

Thanks everyone for your response. Yes, the boat is new to me. So the consensus seems to be motor out, drive off. I was afraid of that. I'm going to do a search so I can start getting an idea if it might be something I can tackle myself. I do all the work on my cars so I'm not mind getting dirty, I just dont know about the fiberglass repair.

No one knows, he never came back and followed up.
If you have a problem and can't find an answer in the archives, best thing you could do is post a new thread stating what engine you have and what exactly your problem is. Then it won't get lost at the end of some year and a half old post from someone else.
