I just purchased a boat yesterday, the previous owner lost he key, how do I get a new key. Or do I have to replace the ignition switch?
It is a 1984 15 ft bass boat with Johnson 30HP outboard (not sure what year motor is).

Get the code of the ignition switch and see the dealer. There are only a few keys. Otherwise take the boat to the dealer service shop -- they will use a try-out ring to find the right key. Buy one, then go to Lowes, Home Depot etc,. and buy a few more.

Look for a number stamped on the key switch. If you're lucky you'll find one. A new key can be ordered by a dealer if you can provide the number.
I got a new key for my 25 Evinrude, but I had the original key (with number).

If you want to know the year of your motor, post the serial number. Someone around here will tell you!

An ignition switch is not that hard to replace. Might be quicker and easier?

Not if you get the code off the switch. When the old switch is removed the next question we get is "I took off all the wires and now I don't remember where they go" or "the new switch is marked different -- what do I do now?"
