What is the best way to screw in the swivel base to a metal bench seat? The seat is enclosed not allowing access to use a nut and bolt system. I have seen other postings that say to use 3/4 plywood, but I don't understand how to use the plywood. Do I screw the plywood to the seat first? That seems like I will run in to the same poblem, I can't access the underneath to use the nut and bolt system. Please help!!! Thanks.

Welcome to iboats!!

Use the plywood to "spread the load" More than likely getting under the seat to install nuts and bolts is out of the question. Use sealed up plywood and attach your seat base and seat. Use stainless steel sheet metal screws to attach the plywood to the seat.

That will effectively spread the load and provide adaquate support.

You can get by with 3/4 or 5/8 exterior garde plywood (even 1/2 if you are light) , a box of stainless steel sheetmetal screws (probably a size 8 or 10) that are at least 1/2 longer than your plywood.

Be sure to use stainless steel hardware to attach your seat swivels and one last note....... you get what you pay for on seat swivels. The cheap ones rust fast!!

I apprecitate the responses. When you say I should you the plywood, am I using the nut and bolt system to screw the base of the seat to the wood and then the wood to the bench seat?

That's one way to do it...fasten base/seat securely to precut plywood panel, then attach panel to the bench.

Re: Seats in Jon Boat

hey hpofficer, what i did when i had a small jon boat was i screwed a piece of 3/4 plywood to my boat the same size as the benchseats on he boat, then with the swivel part screwed it to the plywood and boat, then used the bolts that came with my new sets to bolt the seats to swivel. i had very little room with short swivels but it turned out good.
