got a seized bolt on my lower unit ('78 85hp Johnson). have tried to remove it with various tools and penetrating oil and am now to the point of applying heat. i dont own any torches so i was wondering if an inexpensive butane torch you can get at the hardware store would heat it enough to expand the aluminum to the point of freeing the bolt. also any step by step info would be appreciated thanks

Re: removing seized bolt from crossflow lower unit

That's what I used to one ouf of mine. I already had it at home, but it's a small propane torch with a trigger start nozzle thing on the top. Turn the valve, squeeze the trigger, instant flame. Let it heat up a while, then beat it to death with an impact driver and a pair of vice grips. I had to cut a groove in the end of the bolt for the impact driver since the head of the bolt had broke off. Got it done, but took me a while, and a lot of cussing, and a few cuts/bruises to show for my hard work.

Yeah, my lower came off ok once it was separated by wedge, leaving me nice stub of a bolt sticking out. Dremel'ed a notch into it, and went from there.
