I picked up this motor a couple weeks ago and dont know much of its history, other than I was told "it ran ok last year". I took it out for a test run today and it ran about a quarter mile and it just stopped dead in the water and would not restart. It would roll over, just no fire. I brought it back home and checked the spark, seems good on both cylinders. Tried new gas, even tried squirting some into the carb and nothing. Doesnt even sputter. I squirted some right in the cylinders and still nothing. Tomorrow I am going to check compression and see what I get.

Any suggestions other that that?

Remove the carb and thoroughly clean it.
Check the fuel pump filter for gunk and while the carb is off hook up the fuel tank and purge the fuel lines.
You may have flooded it out when you squirted gas into the cylinders.

Here is a link to a few articles written about the 9.9 and 15 OMC engines. A must read in my opinion. Also, at the top of this forum there is a Top Secret File you need to have a look at. Beyond that, I would check for spark and see if your getting spark to both cylinders. If it starts and runs for a while check for spark the next time it shuts down. If you don't know the history it's probably time for a carb. cleaning and kit and a new impeller. Best of luck and keep us posted. Rick.

I've read the articles before I posted, all are good and I am down to the check compression step. I had the carb off yesterday and sprayed it out with carb cleaner, but I had no rebuild kit (going to go look for that today).

I know it is not recommended, but I tried some starting fluid in the cylinders first. I would of thought it should of at least sputtered, but it didn't. Is it possible the rings could be stuck compressed?

A compression gauge is also on my list today.

I had already changed the impeller and oil in the lower unit.

Will let you know....

If you don't want to buy a compression tester some auto stores will loan you one for free. Check around.
Autozone and Oreilys are a couple I know of.

Maybe you sheared the flywheel key. Seems strange you can't even get a hiccup out of starting fluid.

The only time I had a similar problem as yours was when I accidentaly grabbed a gas can of diesel instead of the 50:1 mix. I took off the end to the fuel line and stuck it into the can and primed the motor. Fired it up and it ran for 5-10 seconds and then quit. Wouldn't do nothing. Took me all day to figure out what the problem was.

Well if it's that dead you should disconnect your kill switch. It may be stuck closed so that your spark is going straight to ground. Rick.

Rebuilt the carb and checked the compression. There is 105 on both cylinders. Anyone know what it is supposed to be?

I guess I will check the key now, dont know what else to try...

Re: Johnson 9.9 J10RELESC 1990

Well, I'm not sure what happened, but it is running now. Here's what I did. I popped the fly wheel off, saw nothing wrong and put it back on. I read on here somewhere to set the low speed idle to 1 turn out, I had it 3 turns out. Put the plugs back in and it fired right up!

I can only guess that originally I sucked some dirt in from the gas can and rebuilding the carb fixed that. Other than that, I really did nothing else.

Back to the lake tomorrow to see if I have to row back again. I hope not, walleye trip planned for the week of the 17th,

Thanks for the help,

Gary

105 on both is a good reading. Make sure you torque the flywheel nut down properly or you'll be back here posting the same thing tomorrow.

Have fun on the water.
