62 fishing scott mfg by mculloch I have a question I checked my reed valves
on a sum carb. old outboard motor service manual says petal stops should be
1/4 inch high, well I checked mine and they were .350 thousands of an inch.
Whould this keep the engine from starting ? I bent them back to .250 by pressing down on them. Now they all measure (all 4) .250 thousands of an inch but would .350 keep the engine from starting ? they were all .350 Thanks

Re: reeds valves

I am sure you mean .350", not .350 thousandths. .350 thousandths would be .000350"

No, it would not matter.

Re: reeds valves

WRONG ! I worked in machine shop for thirty years, .350 = three hundred and fifty thousandths of an inch .025 (twenty five thousandths) smaller than 3/8 of an inch.

Re: reeds valves

Incidently, all the motor did was backfire. But thanks for your post.

Re: reeds valves

That is not the way you wrote it, fakeplay.

.350" does = 350 thousandths of an inch, but .350 thousandths is actually 350 millionths.

You must use either the decimal notation or spell out the fraction, but you cannot use both.

BTW, I was teaching math when you were born.

Re: reeds valves

Now that that's over, it would not keep it from starting, but it might eventually lead to reed breakage from over flexing.

Re: reeds valves

Backfiring ussually means you somehow swapped the plug wires. I just found out I did it on a motor I was working on. I couldn't beleive it, I was so careful! They must have been like that when I got it....:)

Sir, It's not the first time a math teacher has been wrong. .350 = three hundred and fifty thousanth's of an inch. .025 thousanth's less than 3/8's of an inch. Thank You !

Re: reeds valves

Never mind about that. Did you try switching plug wires? Also, you said that you hadn't torqued the flywheel properly. Did you remove it to see if your failure to do that sheared the key?

You really should answer the questions people ask you. Otherwise, we have no idea what you have and haven't done.

If it's still backfiring, and you've switched the wires without it helping, my bet is that you sheared the key because you didn't torque the crankshaft nut. To find out, you'll have to pull the flywheel again.

The two most common reasons for backfiring are switched plug wires and a sheared key. Until you tell us you have double checked those things, you're wasting our time.

Re: reeds valves

Go back and read your first post, fakeplay.

You are now agreeing with me, not what you first posted.

Never mind that.

Are you really getting backfiring or is it sneezing back through the carb?

Backfiring happens if a plug fires when the exhaust ports are open. Most of the time that means the plug wires are switched or the magneto is about 180 degrees out of time. It is a loud bang.

Sneezing happens when the mixture is too lean. It sounds like a.. . .sneeze.

Answer CAT's questions. Without those answers we can help you no more.
