Have questions. I have a 69 2.5 that needs tuned. I have set to specs and seems to idle low ( 350-400) Any tips on points/timing and also on points I think I read a thread on here that I dont set dwell on this. Is that right? Any help would be great.

Go up to the adults only sticky, there is a merc manul there for your engine. it should answer all your questions.

I'm kinda surprised your that low. Especially if the boats in the water. Are you using the boats tach or a shop tach?
You need a dwell meter to set points on pretty much everything with points. They can be had at sears for 30 bucks

Re: 2.5 inline4 tuning

I am using a shop tach and that is with muffs not in the water. I was having a bad backfire through the carb. I think I got that problem fixed(timing was way off) but now I need to fine tune. It just wants to idle really low.???

Re: 2.5 inline4 tuning

you have an idle speed screw on the side of the carb ya know.... Download manual 1 out of the "Adults only" section. all the info you can ever need is in there. The file is huge, over a gig. Make sure you right click and save as.
