Runs in driveway not in water?

I have a Johnson V-4 140, 1983 model. Just aquired boat and thought I had it running great. Will start up and run fine at home but as soon as I back it in the water and try to start it, it will not run. It tries to start and will for a second and than dies. The longer it is in the water, the worse the problem. I take it back home and hook up the hose and it cranks right up. I am stumped.

Compression and spark check. Let us all know the results. Check fuel pump as well. mine started and ran fine on the muffs last summer till I got it on the water and then died out because the fuel pump was failing. Pump bulb when in the water and see if it still runs for you.
