Evinrude 5.5 Fisherman

Hey guys, just picked up an Evinrude 5.5 Fisherman, just wondering the year of it.

Serial is #5512-51683

Also, Im wondering about the oil for the foot, it says on it hypoid oil only, what is hypoid, and could I replace it with 75w-90 castrol syntec?

5512 = 1956 model ... I'll let someone else comment on the gearcase lube.

It is a 1956. "Hypoid" refers to automotive rear axles where the pinion gear is lower than the centerline of the ring gear. That was long ago, and no longer a concern. So, the modern equivelent is 90 weight gear oil. Or 80-90. Or I see no problem with the 75-90.

May I ask what you paid for the 1956 motor? I have the same motor with the original gas tank that I am going to sell, but I am not sure what a fair price would be.
