I'm looking for a little bit of help identifying my carb/choke so that I can order the choke linkage. I've got an '89 merc 5.7L in a Sanger Ski boat. The problem is that the drawings in the manual and in parts databases don't seem to match what I've got. I've attached a picture of mine as well as a drawing from the service manual. Any thoughts? I assume that the pull-off attaches to the same contraption as the choke spring and then one linkage goes from that vertical bit to the choke plate. In the manual it looks like both the spring and the pull off attach up at the plate. I'm 80% convinced by the service manual that this is a Weber WFB #9770 but I can't seem to match a drawing to reality. I'd like to order this so that it's ready when I go get it out of storage (I can't get the carb ID # until I get it out of storage). Any ideas where to buy the linkage?

Ayuh,.... Have a look around the Edlebrock website,...
Their Performer carbs are parts interchangable with the Merc/ Webers....

...except that is not a weber, fuel inlet is in the wrong location.

Can you post a picture of the carb fromthe front looking down, preferably with the flame arrestor removed.

I may be able to get over to it tomorrow and get a pic. I'll post it as soon as possible.

Sorry for the delay, things got a bit crazy. Well, I finally had a chance to get it out of storage. 180shabah, you are correct, it's not a Weber. It's a Quadrajet model number 17085013 which is an '85 but I think that it's the 4MV model (earlier model) with divorced choke; I figure this was used for marine applications in later years.

Here's a nice picture from a rebuild write-up for comparison:
http://www.stratagaz.com/Quadrajet/37%20-%20Choke%20pulloff%20rod%20install.jpg
and Imageshck photos of mine
It looks like I'm missing just one linkage rod but I also see now that I'm missing the stepper that sit behind the bracket (red) and possibly that tube that extends out in front of the pull off.

So now the question is: is it worth it to try to source the linkage and other missing parts, or should I just spend $50 and do an electric upgrade?

you are missing 1 essential piece, the linkage rod, the fast idle cam is not a factor for marine use, the tube is a vacume source for automotive use only, find a shop that dose carb work, they should have something that will work

Yes you have a 4MV quadrajet with a divorced choke. It iwas a older model carby for GM cars, but was used on mercruisers for many years later than for GM cars. (I don't think the diagram you included is your carby at all).

You are missing what I think they refer to as the secondary choke pull off linkage rod - it connects the large choke butterfy above the secondary barrels to the black vacuum diapragm shown in your photo.

You should be able to source this very cheaply from any decent carby shop that sells parts for quadrajets (or a wrecker).

You do not need to do an electric choke conversion -it would not help - as this would only effect the choke over the primary barrels.

There are many good sites with quadrajet manuals for the 4MV that explain your carb and have exploded parts diagrams - just google quadrajet 4MV manual and I am sure you will find one.

Hope that helps.
