3hp Johnson JW18R- Ratio, Reverse and other ?'s

Hi, we got this motor with an aluminum boat. It seems to run great and even after sitting for a few months fires right up. Well we are gonna use it soon and i want to make sure on the ratio. I have always though that outboards were like 50:1 but i have been seeing 24:1 on some of these old motors?? Can someone confirm what it is for this motor?

Also is there reverse? If so i cant find it unless it is the little tiny butterfly looking switch on the side. Although it does not seem to do anything when i turn it.

Any lite that could be shined on this motor i would be thankful, maybe a repair or owners manual?

BTW we paid $1200 for a 14' mirror craft, 3hp Johnson, electric troller, battery, pole holders, life jackets ect. I think we got a smokin deal, what do you guys think?

Think I answered your other post but anway:

1st of all. In good to excellent shape it's a very very good motor and with proper care it will outlive all of us.

You can run modern (TCW3 rated oil) but you MUST run it at 24:1. This motor doesn't have all the needle and roller bearings a newer 2 stroke may have. At 50:1 it will run very well for a short period of time then you have a worn out boat anchor.

I don't believe it has a gearshift. No neutral. Pivot 180 deg for reverse.
The butterfly looking thing is the fuel shut off valve. Turn clockwise to shut the fuel supply off.

You should check the lower unit for the proper amount of gear oil and make sure there is no water in it. I'll have to refer you to other more knowledgable for any other specifics. Good luck with your boat and have fun with it.

JW 18 is a 1963, definately 24: 1 straight drive, starts in gear, turn around for reverse. i have a 1967. fun motor.

Thanks for the answers. We used it today and it ran like a dream all day. Didnt even use a full tank of gas.
Only one problem, broke the prop pin (didnt pull the motor up fast enough when we hit some shallows Doh! Is there a johnson PN that would make getting the right pin easy?
