Received the boat and motor as a trade. Wanted to change the gearcase lubricant oil in the lower unit but I could not get the upper vent plug screw to unscrew with a normal flat blade screwdriver. I can get the lower screw off. I was told by the dealer I got the boat from that a special tool is needed to remove the upper vent screw plug, called a t-bar. Has anyone heard of this and if so where can I get one?

seems you need a little more leverage, I had the same problem with my 140 Evinrude that sat for a long time. I used a standard flathead and used a pair of vise grips to give me more leverage, once you get past the first turn the rest is easy. A T-bat is basically that: a screwdriver with extended T handle for leverage.

thanks Kirk. I just found another thread recommending the use of an impact wrench to remove the screw. I'll give that a whack.:)

I had same problem, saw same thread. Got an impact screwdriver at Sears for $23; two whacks and the screw backed right out. The driver comes w/4 bits and accepts impact sockets so you will find other uses for it.

I discovered a great way to losen frozen drain plugs or any other aluminum or heat sensitive parts. Buy yourself one of those portable steam cleaners such as sold by Shark, Monster, or any other you may see on those obnoxious late night infomercials. A few minutes of hot concentrated steam at the stuck part will losed it up. The steam is only a few degrees below boiling (100C/212F) and will not damage your lower unit. In fact, I've found that the steam also seems to break-up the oxidation that usually causes stuck aluminum parts.
