I have now codemned my 91 4.3l that came in a rinker captiva 206 that i bought a lill over a month ago. ($1075 what a deal) and a very nice trailer with it!! 6" of water or so in the oil pan from the boat sitting outside without a carb on it nor the intake covered up! Crank will not turn with a 1/2" breaker bar.

Im debating the rebuild that engine or buy a long block.

My question is for anyone that has rebuilt a marine block or has knowledge of the parts that go into them.

The camshaft.... Is it a "special" marine specs only or is there a automotive equivalent?

I assume nothing special about the rods, crank, heads, pistons/rings.

Anything else i may be overlooking?

Most people suggest getting a re-manned block from Rapido marine. Tough to match the price of his stuff with the cost of a rebuild.

Cam is different, brass freeze plugs, head gasket is marine, and more stuff that I'm not thinking about.

I agree pretty much with what Damond says, and if you're rebuilding, as long as it's not a balance shaft engine, GM has a few performace cams available for that engine that are recommended for marine, probably cheaper then aftermarket replacements.

I'd go with a reman. It may be able to be rebuilt, but at what cost and is it worth it? Why was it sitting up for so long with the carb off? What else is wrong with it? Let's not forget about all the rust that will be in there with 6" of water and the resurfacing that will be required. As long as the boat is in good shape (no rotten stringers/floor/transom) the price of a long block is well worth it.

I had a similar problem with mine. $1000 what a deal and the theres a bent rod inside. I rebuilt my 4.3 carb motor with a new rotating assembly and the cam and head gaskets and intake gaskets and only spent around 350 bucks. I got everything from Summit and have not had a problem yet. Its really quite simple. I read the gm manual and talked with guys on here and made it through. Good luck. make sure you change the water pump impeler in the out drive, i overlooked it on mine and im now trying to figure that out. Just a warning before you end up on the river and the motor stops since theres no water in it.
