Need serial number info.....please!

I am looking at a motor and all I have is the serial# and markings on the side of the cover and shaft. It's a Mercury and is marked 9.8 HP on the cover and motor and is electric start w/ controls. The serial is A901281. Would like to know the year/model/ and 2 or 4 stroke. Thanks in advance!

That is not a good number, it does not show on any lists.

0A90xxxx would fit into the sequence in the mid 80's.

Serial number is okay, as it shows up in Merc EPC database.

9.8hp 2cyl, 2-stroke

It has the squared off one piece molded cowling, so I'd agree its probably mid-80's. I'm thinking late 1985 era.

Does it happen to have a brown colored band?

Yes, it has the brown band......so late 80's then. And are you 100% on the two stroke? The only reason I am asking is it has full controls and came off of a pontoon..for some reason that just has me thinking 4 stroke. You are probably right though since that came from the database!

Definitely 2-stroke

Definitely 1984/5 model.
