I cannot get my J15RESR to start cold unless I manually spray gas into the carb. Once it starts it runs great, idles, and even starts on every first pull unless I let it sit for 20-30 minutes and then try to start it. I just finished rebuilding the carb but it still did not fix my problem. I have a feeling it has something to do with the choke but I am not sure. I feel no resistance when I pull the choke knob out. If I pull the choke knob out fast, the butterfly will close but the motor will still not start. Should pulling the choke knob out also pump gas into the intake? Please help. I am willing to try anything at this point. Thanks.

No gas gets pumped when a choke is activated, the choke restricts air and increases the fuel in the mixture.

There is no resistance when I pull out the choke knob but if I pull it out real quick then the butterfly closes. Should there be resistance on the choke knob? There is no slowly pushing it back in. It is either in or out. And if the choke IS working correctly, what else should I look for that is making it hard to start when cold? It fires right up if I spray something like fogging oil directly into the carb past the butterfly.

iwould check you linkage on the choke. it does not have any resistance, except a slight detent. it also sounds like you need to adjust your slow speed needle. also could have a sticking float needle.

pump bulb, in neutral, throttle turn all the way fast, choke activated, pull rope. when it tries to start, push choke in, pull rope. play with choke in and out, till the motor settles down. should take no more than 3 pulls.

The slow speed needle was the trick! Thanks for your input. I had it too lean. Now it fires on the first pull when cold everytime! Now I just need to fine tune it on the lake. Thanks!
