I'm new at this, so here go's. I need some ones help. please help. I have a boat that was rigged with a 60 hp mercury four stroke. I sold the 60 hp fourstroke. and put a 2006 mercury 90 hp 2 stroke on my boat. the 90 hp runs great except while at an idel, it sounds like junk. and when i put it in gear and going through the no wake zone,:confused: it makes this grinding sound. then when i give it gas it smooths out and runs great. I hate the nois it makes while ideling in gear. it sounds like something is going to break. has any one had this problem before, if so . please be so kind as to tell me what you did to fix it. thanks for any input, any one can give me.

my first thought is that the shift cable at the engine is not adjusted properly and its actually not full in gear until you throttle forward - you want it set up so that when you attach the linkage ( shifter in neutral) it goes on with out pushing or pulling on the shift shaft arm - try that first - did you get it from a dealer or was it ever tested before you bought it ?

Re: noisy mercury while ideling

thank you for your comment, it was mounted on another boat, i tried it. and it was fine, so i bought it. and i mounted it on my boat my self, and the control cables didn't fit, I had to extend both cables about 2 inches. i put the control box in neutral, turned the prop to be sure it was in neutral. and turned the fixtures so they would fit.it worked, goes in gear but makes the grinding noise. you said you thought it may not be going all the way in gear, and you may very well be right. i really don't know a lot about working on boats. but after thinking about what you said. i got some instructions from google. and they were some what different, from the way i had it. the instructions said the gear cable should be 6 inches from the end of the cable back to the slot hole. the way i had it was 6 and 3/4 when i finished changing it, I put it on a water hose and it goes in first and reverse and takes gas ok. i think it may be ok, but i won't know untill i put it on the lake. if that fixed it, i will post it. so if any one else has this problem, it may help them. ps. again, thanks for bringing it to my attention about not being all the way in gear. thanks and may the good lord bless you.

no problem -and if it still does it a little just make minor adjustments - the dimensions they give you are usually accurate or at least a good start , i have found that sometimes it is necessary to tweek the adjustments though .

I 've been back to the lake, and it was much better. the grinding noise was gone, but it raked real loud when going in gear. but then, once in gear it sounded good. i just read your reply, and thanks again. i'll try adjusting it about 2 turns in and try it again. if the raking stops. that should have it. if not i may have to go 4 turns in the other direction, and try it again. but any way it's much better than it was. thanks again, and may the good lord bless you.
