1964 75hp charging too high

I had my DC generator rebuilt and installed a new regulator. The rebuilder set it up so that it was just "plug & play". Well it's charging alright but I think a bit too much. My gauge indicates about 16 volts at WOT. That's in the red zone on the gauge. The manual indicates it should charge at 14.5-15.2 volts. I checked the voltage of my battery with a digital multi meter and it's close to 13 volts, just what the boat gauge indicates at a standstill. I don't have an ammeter hooked up. I have one, but I'm unsure how to connect it.
Is there a way for me to reduce the charge voltage or is it OK?

If you wanted to you could use what is called a Voltage Reducer

This one takes 16V and reduces it to 12V x 2 leads ( you could just cap one of the leads off.

here is the URL ( yes I know it is for a golf cart but Ohm's Law is universal :)

Anyone else?

Thanks for the suggestion but I'm sure there's a way to adjust the regulator. I'm not sure how I would install this to charge the battery. It seems to be intended only to power accessories.

Hahaha wierd I found this on that same golf cart website lol

Test #3: Scenario - good battery, good starter generator, bad voltage regulator

Test the voltage at the battery. The voltage will be very high at full speed. Higher than 14V something like 16V or 18V. Let off the go pedal so motor is at idle. Test the voltage at the battery. The voltage is slightly higher than 12V. When at full speed the starter generator is overcharging the battery. The voltage regulator is allowing all of the power to pass. The voltage regulator is bad. The voltage regulator has failed and is allowing all power coming from the starter generator to overcharge the battery. Solution: replace the voltage regulator.

Keep in mind this is a golf cart, but if more voltage is coming through than desired than it is more than likely the voltage regulator I would think :)

Any thoughts??

Re: 1964 75hp charging too high

Thanks domwebhost, as you can imagine I would like to troubleshoot it while installed as opposed to trailering the boat to the generator shop or taking the generator and regulator back in a box. I'm also trying to get some advice from my auto mechanic who is a fellow boater but he's not familiar with this era. I'm thinking the regulator is adjustable in both amperage and voltage since there are two sets of points that can have the gap adjusted. How it works? I have no idea. I was hoping someone would have a shop manual that deals with the subject or has experience with setting up regulators.
