dont know what happened / 470 merc

today i had my boat out, [18 foot open bow/470 merc]
boat was running great and just quit pulling, motor reved up and smell of hot or bunt grease or maybe rubber and smoke came from dog house.
when i got it home i pulled out drive and it works fine[when i turn prop drive shaft turns] i guess that is fine?
but when i start motor and put into gear i get nothing.
when i pulled outdrive i ran my fingers up into the back of the motor to the fly wheel to the spline there was a sticky grease or maybe melted ruber i dont know.
any ideas on what has gone wrong here and how do i fix it

You spun an engine coupler. You will need to pull engine to replace it.

Time to pull the outdrive and engine and replace the coupler. Not the news you wanted to hear. My guess is there's more to than this. Possible rotted out stringers caused the engine to drop, causing this misalignment between the engine and outdrive, thus burning up the coupler.
Before going any further, take a screwdriver and probe the stringers around the engine mount. See if you can poke the screwdriver into the stringers. If you can, there's your real problem.
