i am thinking of putting trolling battery in front of boat. good or bad idea? just tring not to have to run wire all the way to the back, and save money so i dont have to buy alot of wire.

well really 3rd one for motor or cranking and a back up for cranking, i know i dont need it but better than sorry, and 3rd in front for trolling for room, and save money on wiring, and add a little weight to front of boat.

Sounds very reasonable to me

How is it going to get charged with no wires to the back of the boat?

most guys with dedicated trolling motor batteries have an on board charger and just plug in an extension cord when they get home.

it is just something that has to be done if you want to enjoy the sport they feel I guess.

I wonder how big the trolling motor battery wire needs to be...would #10 work fine???

it doesnt draw like an outboard starter does!

I bet you could find less than spool prices of maybe 20-25 cents a foot

good luck

check the manual start procedure for your engine. even fourstrokes can be manual starts. make sure your crank rope is in good shape. with an engine that is in good working order hand starting isnt an issue if the battery is low.
make sure your able to hand start your motor by trying it once a month or so in a controlled test. middle of the water far from land with a dead battery is no time to try and figure out a procedure you have never done. practicing it a few times at home with muffs on the motor is a great place to try it.

i also keep a set of jumper cables in a storage compartment. in my garage i have a battery charger for the troller batter and just hook it up when the battery is low and let it charge. before i charge the trolling battery i check water levels of both batteries and add distilled water as needed and recheck the troller battery after charge.

i dont think you need a third battery if you have your manual start procedures down.

Re: battery in front

well manual start will not work with my motor, its a inline 6, 90 hp mariner, no pull rope, i am having a little trouble getting motor to run,but differnt story, but the 3rd battery is just for trolling, i will charge it after each trip out, you can troll all day with a good battery, i am redoing all flooring and decks so i figured why not put battery up closer to trolling motor.
mostly just seeing if everyone thinks its a good or bad idea

I'm not sure about the newer "maintenance free" batteries but the older ones will vent off fumes when being charged so make sure the location is ventilated.

my trolling motor is in the front. Has its own dedicated compartment. runs up to a lil panel and my areator for my live well runs off it. works great. I just plug in the onboard charger when I get home.

The troller battery is also in the front of my 14'. I've owned the boat for three years and am still using the battery that came with it. Just make sure it is tied down so that it can't bounce and get damaged.

Yep lots of bouncing in the front compared to the back. Tie it good.
