Re: new guy here

Since you didn't specify the size of your motor, you need to start out by giving us the model # from the plate on the transom bracket ... something like "E70ES74" (1974 Evinrude 70hp) ... or whatever.

Re: new guy here

Your model number should be "115493B" or something very close to that. It's definitely a 2-stroke motor.

Hard starting when warm and leaking gas sounds like you need to have the carbs rebuilt!

Are you planning on working on the motor yourself? If so, you need to buy an OEM service manual before you start tearing things apart!

Check spark, check compression, change lube in gearcase, install water pump kit, etc., etc., etc.

Re: new guy here

Get the manual first.
www.outboardbooks.com

being new to you and you being new to outboards...theres a lot to learn before blowing the engine up, they last for yrs but need a certain amount of attention. Its not rocket science and few of us here are techs.
A 13 yr old can rebuild carbs ( in fact some 13 yr olds here do)
a shop will probably charge you $100 per carb.

watch how simple it is to rebuild your carbs.

I got my first johnson 150 last yr, knowing next to nothing I hired a mechanic from craigslist and we went through it top to bottom.
I don't believe anything sellers say. !

Re: new guy here

You aren't giving us enough useable information to help you out.
We need the model number. Its on the mounting bracket , there should be a plate, or look on the engine block for a silver disc with numbers.

You can't order certain parts until you know the exact model, its hard enough even with the right model number for me.
You can probably go ahead and get the carb kits right here on iBoats.

see if your model number is listed here, if not ...it might not be a 1976.

http://www.outboardbooks.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=items.main&boat=JM Outboard Motors&orderby=year

Should be one the models listed.
Order the factory service manual, not the owner manual, its the best $42 you will spend.

I have no luck searching for parts on iBoats, but you can call them, they have very good customer service 1-800-743-1123

It "might" be this, someone needs to double check me on this.

The problem is, how do you know what year your engine is if you don't have the model number?

Or you can search eBay for "1976 Evinrude 115" ... there are several factory service manuals currently listed for less $$$ ... as well as some parts manuals.
