Hi, I have an electromatic motor and I'm having problems with the charging system. Whenever I remove the positive lead off of the battery the motor shuts off, telling me that the charging system is not working. I'm a motor mechanic but I'm new to outboards. I need to know how to go about fixing/checking the charging system on this motor. Should I check by disconnecting the magneto and running the engine? With the engine off should I get any kind of resistance? Basically I just need some help on how to go about sorting out the charging system.

Thanks,
Ray

Ray, the first thing you need to learn is that it is not a car. The second thing you need to learn is to NEVER, EVER, disconnect stuff while it is running. Related to that admonition is that loose, dirty, corroded battery terminals are seen as a disconnect.

Any of the above can and will cause serious and expensive damage to the charging system and ignition pulse pack. Believe me, you don't want to fry the pulse pack.

As for your alternator, test the four diodes. Also do a continuity check on the stator, although it probably is ok.

Many thanks. So do I just check charging voltage at the battery then? Also, could you tell me the voltage I should be looking for? Is there anywhere that I can get a wiring diagram for this motor? Thanks again for you help.

I was hopping that you had some ppl that had replied. I have a 67 Evinrude 80hp that is having about the same problem. The one thing that I have found is if I disconnect the mail lead coming off from the charging system and it will tell you what the voltage it reading. What I am hopping is that you figured out what was going on because I could use some help. If you where able to get a wiring diagram I really could use one. Also where you ever able to find out what was wrong with yours because maybe I could check to see if I am having the same problem. I am having 14.2 volts but once I connect it to the battery I am losing all charging voltage. If you can please send me a email with some information. Thanks
