Motor Recommendation Needed

The old Johnson 50 gave up the ghost. I would like to replace it with a motor that has electronic ignition and fuel injection. Reliability and low maintenance is a priority to me. Any recommendations on model years and brands? I am shopping used.

I'd suggest a later Evinrude 50 hp, but making sure it has manual shifting, not electric. Fuel Injection, though, is another issue. If you insist on that, then I'm not sure what to suggest, since I have no experience with injected outboards.

I am with you on the manual shift. My current 50 is a 1971 model, and the hydro electric shift is part of the problem. What year did OMC get away from the electric shift?

If fuel injection is mandatory (a wise choice by the way), you then have the option of two-stroke or four-stroke. Suzuki makes a very fine and reasonably priced 40/50 HP EFI 4-stroke. Evinrude makes a very fine DFI two-stroke. If you have a Tohatsu dealer in the area those are good two-strokes as well. Obviously there is also Yamaha, Merc, and Honda for 4-strokes but prices tend to be higher than the Suzy. We generally suggest that you buy whatever you can get service on locally. It is a pain to buy a motor that you have to travel long distances for if by chance you do need service.

Honda is a smooth running machine.

My guess is most any brand made in the last five years or so are pretty much equil on performance.

1973. I just dodged that bullet :)
