Ive got an 85 I believe, serial number A932355, Mercury Mariner 75. I can not get it to start without starter fluid. So I know the cylinders are firing theres just a fuel delivery problem. I was going to tow my boat to a friends house who is more mechanically inclined than I am but now the trim won't work. I need to lift the motor to tow it. Can anyone help. Also any info about how the fuel system works on this motor would be greatly appreciated. Thanks...

Will, don't use the starting fluid. It has no oil in it, and that is hard on the motor. Try some premix fuel. if it won't start with premix, either the starter is turning too slow, or the compression is bad.

Does the fuel enrichener work? If not, that could be the whole problem.

When you say premix fuel, what exactly do you mean? And also what is the fuel enrichener?

premix, put your gas and 2 cycle oil in squirt bottle, old windex bottle works good, i had the same problem, never use starter fliud really bad on motor. next is your trim there should be a knob on the side of your trim motor and oil tank that will release the pressure, you will have to manually pick up your motor but you will have to release the pressure or it will be impossible. then you can lock your motor in the up position, mine trim also went out, it a $100 rebuild to rebuild a trim motor. you need to trouble shoot and find out what trim will and wont do.

also for the fuel problem, has it been running or set up, that will take more trouble shooting, you may have to prime it til it almost floods so that the carbs pick up fuel, are you sure there is no water in fuel mix??, is prime bulb priming is there a hole in the line, you need to let us know what you have trouble shot so we can help you more.
